The main idea for the exhibition design proposal is based on shelving as the core, defining element of every archive. The majority of potential visitors thinks about enormous amounts of shelves filled with media, papers, files, documents when they think about the »Stasi Records Archive«. The concept is built around this central, strongly emotional image.
The visitor shall feel the dense atmosphere of an archive space in the exhibition despite not being allowed to visit the real archives.
The foyers, which include most parts of the exhibition, are protected monument. Attachments to the walls are not allowed, escape routes must remain free, only non-combustible materials are allowed to be used. Therefore the space is structured with metal shelves which serve as room dividers, creating defined spaces and corridors. These shelves are filled with folder dummies made of cast ceramic which create the narrative element in the presentation.
The actual exhibition content is presented in and on the shelves. Printed aluminum panels filled with content are attached to the front and back of the shelves. Exhibits are presented in showcases covered with glass which are integrated into the shelves.
